Masks that Protect Wearers from Inhaling Swine Flu (H1N1) Virus

Swine Flu H1N1 Influenza is spreading rapidly throughout the nation. H1N1 vaccines are finally being delivered but there is not enough to go around. Even if you get the vaccine today, it will take weeks for your immune system to have the antibodies necessary to prevent illness if exposed. So what can you do to protect yourself before the vaccine is available to you and while you are waiting for the vaccine to do its job?

As with every flu season, basic hygiene such as hand washing frequently, keeping your hands away from your nose and mouth, and sneezing and coughing into your sleeve is highly recommended. Use hand sanitizer often when you are unable to wash your hands. Cleanse surfaces that come into contact with your hands and face, such as: phones, refrigerator door hands, door knobs, and cabinet handles.

In the event that you need to care for someone with H1N1 flu, you may need to get some protective masks. There are several types of medical masks but you need the correct one to protect you from H1N1. The CDC has recommended the N95 masks for health care workers. These masks can be found online and in medical supply stores.

In order for the mask to be effective, it must be used properly. Wash your hands before putting on the mask. The cloth side should be worn toward the individual’s mouth and the waterproof side should face outward. Masks should fit snugly around your chin and mouth with the metallic strip on the mask molding securely to the bridge of your nose.

A mask not worn correctly is like not wearing one at all!!!

Try not to fiddle or touch the mask while it is on. This will only transfer germs to your hands and face. Discard and replace your mask often especially when it becomes wet, damaged, or soiled. Make sure to wash your hands before and after removing your mask.
